Fulgencio Lazo: See The World Through His Art

Fulgencio Lazo is a native son of Oaxaca, Mexico, and like other gifted artists, takes much of his inspiration from this beautiful and historic state.  Looking through Maestro Lazo’s eyes, one is introduced to Oaxaca’s indigenous peoples and traditions in rich, colorful and refreshing ways, stylized from his unique perspective.

The artwork of Fulgencio Lazo is a celebration of community and family, urging the peoples of the Sierra to take pride in themselves and to treasure and preserve their cultures.

Lazo brought an enormous capacity for work and a powerful innate talent to his study of art.  He is a graduate of the School of Fine Arts of the Universidad Autónoma Benito Juárez of Oaxaca.  It is interesting to note that he also studied with respected Japanese-Mexican artist and teacher Shinzaburo Takeda. This natural talent has grown, transformed and matured into a strong personal voice that art lovers now readily recognize as, “That’s a Fulgencio Lazo.” Motifs full of intimate and cultural symbolism, personal and collective, are recurring characteristics of his work.

Fulgencio Lazo’s Featured Works of Art

His paintings are polyphonic works involving a high degree of complexity in all levels, his vision for the piece being revealed one layer at a time, like the opening of a bright flower.  Studying his canvases, one might feel at the eye of a hurricane is energy and motion. Yet, at the heart of the storm, there is a profound and moving serenity…a safe place…at peace.

Never is this truer than in La Despedida, an exploration of rich texture and bold colors over cloth. His freely made brush strokes evoke a beautiful visual and powerfully emotional experience.

Another Fulgencio Lazo in the Oaxaca Strokes Collection is Musica de Madrugada. Each individual viewer would have a different reaction. What was the artist saying in Musica de Madrugada? This striking piece in rich texture and bold colors over cloth again features freely made brush strokes to lead one on a pleasant journey of the senses.

Memorias Del Tren is a statement in rich texture and bold colors over cloth. The artist’s freely made brushstrokes are a dynamic and beautiful representation of his subject. Those bright colors simply pop and create excitement!

In Mariposa, another of Lazo’s signature techniques can be witnessed—the natural elegance of its lines. Sizzling colors and rich texture combine over cloth with the artist employing freely made brush strokes.
